9 great USA festivals to try in 2019

The Coachella music festival in California kick-started the 2019 festival season a few weeks ago. This year is a great one for festivals of all sorts. Whether you want to take in some of the best American music, food or culture - there will be an event for you. Here's our pick of some of the best USA festivals to experience in 2019. 

Jamming in Tennessee

Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Manchester, Tennessee, 13-16 June 2019
Growing from an original idea to host jam bands and folk rock artists – like the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band, the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival has expanded since its 2002 origins to include a wide range of genres. This year the festival takes place in Manchester, Tennessee and features Phish, Childish Gambino and The Lumineers, amongst many others.

Discover America's musical grass roots

Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Telluride, Colorado, 20-23 June 2019                                 
Music, mountains, hiking and beer, what's not to like? This year's annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival has a lineup which includes Jim James, the Sam Bush Band and Kacey Musgraves. There are also workshops, circus performances and music contests to enjoy, all in one of America's most beautiful and historic mining towns, set amongst the Rockies.

Celebrate African American culture

Essence Festival, New Orleans, Louisiana, 5-7 July 2019
Missed Michelle Obama on her recent visits to the UK? You can catch her at this spectacular event instead. Inspired by Essence, the magazine for African American women, the annual Essence festival is the largest event celebrating African-American culture and music in the USA. Now in its 25th year July's festival features Missy Elliott, Mary J Blige and Pharrell Williams.

Yosemite Music Festival, Yosemite Mariposa County, California, 6-7 July 2019
Mariposa sits at the gateway to Yosemite National Park in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills. International celebration of local food

Slow Food Nations, Denver, Colorado, 19-21 July 2019
Slow Food Nations returns to Denver for its third year, with the theme 'Where Tradition Meets Innovation'. Leaders, farmers, chefs, educators and hungry families all join together for a weekend of tastings, tours and talks, grounded in the ideal of local food and traditional cooking. Modeled after the renowned Terra Madre – the original Slow Food event in Turin, Italy – Slow Food Nations has become central to the North American slow food movement.

All in a pickle

Picklesburgh festival, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 26-28 July 2019
No city owes more to the humble pickle that Pittsburgh, where H.J. Heinz began selling dill pickles back in the 1870s. The Picklesburgh festival is a culinary celebration of all things pickle with new dishes, ethnic foods, artisan pickle cocktails, pickle-flavoured snacks and all sorts of foods featuring pickled ingredients. Look out for the annual pickle-juice drinking competition.

Blues and beer

Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza, Mammoth Lakes, California, 1-4 August 2019
Hosted in one of the most naturally stunning landscapes in the USA, the Mammoth Lakes Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza is nestled beside Mammoth Lakes, famous for their clean, clean, azure water. The line-up includes blues, R&B, soul, and rock ’n’ roll artists and with over 60 craft breweries pouring more than 150 beers and ciders from around the USA, Bluesapalooza is one of the biggest parties going. Away from the festival, visitors can ski, kayak, mountain bike and fish, or enjoy a dozen or so other outdoor sports.

Bayside music and art

Outside Lands, San Francisco, California, 9-11 August 2019
Golden Gate Park plays host to the Bay Area's finest celebration of music, food and wine, beer, art and comedy at this year's Outside Lands festival. Headline acts this year include Childish Gambino, Twenty One Pilots, Paul Simon, blink-182 and Kacey Musgraves.

Gourmet Colorado

Denver Food and Wine Festival, Denver, Colorado, 4-8 September 2019
The people of Denver certainly love their booze and food. The Denver Food and Wine Festival is a multi-day extravaganza celebrating Denver's culinary and gastronomic scene. Events include Dinner Under the Stars, a Culinary Cinema Series, the Shakedown cocktail event – where local celebrity bartenders compete for Denver’s 'best cocktail' award – and the festival's signature event, 'The Grand Tasting', where more than 40 restaurants and bars serve their signtaure dishes, craft beers and drinks.
