Grapevine, Texas: The Perfect Family-Friendly Start to Your American Road Trip

As summer travel approaches and UK families finalise their holiday plans, Grapevine offers the ideal first stop on a classic American road trip. Located just 10 minutes from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, with nonstop flights from London Heathrow via British Airways and American Airlines, Grapevine makes for a seamless arrival point, perfect for easing into a US adventure without the "are we there yet?" fatigue.
Car rental rates here also beat those at the airport, so after a few days settling in, it's the ideal place to pick up the keys and set off on your own adventure across Texas.
One of Grapevine's biggest perks for families is how much there is to do without spending much at all. Many of its core attractions, including historic sites, trails, museums, and public spaces, are free or very low cost, and the complimentary visitor shuttle makes getting around this walkable town even easier.
Historic Main Street is lined with colourful storefronts and more than 80 locally owned shops and galleries, filled with antiques, gifts, and seasonal finds. Younger travellers will enjoy spotting murals, sculptures, and quirky installations along the Public Art Trail, which turns a simple stroll into a mini scavenger hunt.
After a morning of browsing, head up the Grapevine Observation Tower for views 150 feet above the city, taking in the Fort Worth and Dallas skylines along with a front row seat to planes landing and taking off at DFW.
This summer, the tower is also hosting dinosaur-themed programming as part of All Tracks Lead to Grapevine, a citywide celebration turning the town into a prehistoric playground. Families can dig into dinosaur exhibits at the Tower Gallery for just a dollar, and the Historic Palace Theatre is joining in with dinosaur-themed films every Thursday through summer.
Beyond the dinosaurs, Grapevine's Settlement to City Museums offer free admission, making it easy to explore local history without any advance planning. Historic Nash Farm is another free stop worth building into the day, a working 19th century homestead where children can wander the grounds, visit the barn, meet heritage animals, and watch traditional farming demonstrations.
No trip to Grapevine is complete without a ride on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. Restored 1920s coaches with polished wood and brass accents carry guests back in time, complete with western sing-alongs along the way. The railroad runs 46 weeks of excursions a year, including seasonal specials like Dinos on the Tracks through summer.
For bigger shopping ambitions, Grapevine Mills is the largest mall in North Texas, with more than 180 stores, restaurants, and attractions across 1.8 million square feet, and a regular fixture on America's top shopping lists. International visitors can enjoy tax free shopping at the mall's refund kiosk. While there, step into immersive experiences like the Meow Wolf exhibition, explore LEGOLAND Discovery Center and SEA LIFE Grapevine Aquarium, or bring younger children to PEPPA PIG World of Play. Dig World is coming soon too, offering a construction themed adventure where kids and adults can get hands on with real machinery.
Outdoors, Lake Grapevine offers boating, water skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing, along with plenty of space for a relaxed picnic by the shore. Beyond the lake, more than 1,400 acres of parkland connect scenic hiking, biking, and walking trails, and the Grapevine Botanical Gardens provide a peaceful escape from the pace of the city.
There's no shortage of places to stay either, with more than 20 hotels across every price point. Great Wolf Lodge is home to North Texas's largest indoor water park, complete with slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river, along with character appearances and themed activities during its Summer Camp In. Gaylord Texan Resort brings its own water park to the mix too, with a 600-foot lazy river and multi-level water play structure, plus seasonal entertainment as part of its wider SummerFest programme.
