Vibrant colours and spooky tales - Park City in October

Park City, Utah, located just 35 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport, is famous for its world class ski resorts of Deer Valley and Park City Mountain. Set amid the soaring Wasatch Mountains, the historic town has also made a name for itself as a summer destination.
Blessed with long sunny days and cool evenings, visitors are attracted to the 600 kilometres of hiking and biking trails, hot air ballooning, boutique shopping, art galleries, bars and restaurants of Historic Main Street and a comprehensive choice of places to stay.
As summer gives way to fall at the end of September, the wooded hillsides overlooking the town begin to take on ever more striking hues of red, yellow and gold. This is a season of calm and the chance to get close to nature by enjoying walks and hikes amid a kaleidoscope of arboreal colour. There are many trails to suit all abilities with the common denominator of experiencing nature's blaze of autumnal colours.
A favourite itinerary among locals is the Silver Lake hike, departing from Park City's Deer Valley. The hike is just over 4.5 miles (out and back) and the rewards are gradually revealed with breathtaking views of Heber Valley, Jordanelle Reservoir and the Uinta Mountains, as well as the tranquillity and space of the outdoors.
Halloween falls at the end of October and is the perfect time to join a 'Park City Ghost Tour' walking through the Historic District of Park City, which dates back to the mid-19th century when Park City was a burgeoning silver mining camp and destined to produce abundant quantities of silver ore for more than a century. The ghost tour is a guided walk through the spooky, and occasionally terrifying tales, of Park City's colourful past. Whether you believe in phantoms or not, this ghostly journey through time should not be missed.
Lodging is very keenly priced during the 'leaf peeping' season and Park City, as well as being a destination in its own right, is an ideal starting point for a road trip to the many splendours of Utah including the 'Mighty 5' National Parks. .
