42 visitusa.org.uk Day one MORNING: A neighbourhood favourite on Manhattan’s Lower East Side since 1888, Essex Market moved to new premises in 2019 but its community ethos remains the same, with independent vendors selling affordable and speciality foods. Drop by for a coffee and bagel, before catching a ferry to Liberty Island where the Statue of Liberty Museum has interactive displays and fantastic views of the iconic monument. AFTERNOON: Stroll along the High Line, a winding public park created on a 1.5-mile-long section of abandoned railway track above Manhattan. Next, scale the new kid on the block: Edge at Hudson Yards. At 100 storeys Edge has the highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere and offers breath-taking views of the Big Apple. EVENING: Enjoy dinner at one of Hudson Yard’s restaurants, before catching a show. The Theatre District around Times Square is the place to go for Broadway hits, while newly commissioned works are performed at The Shed, Hudson Yards’ exciting, movable event and exhibition space. The Rooftop at Pier 17 in the revitalised Seaport District also hosts concerts and events. Day two MORNING: New York is home to department stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, but in 2019 the city’s first and only shopping outlet, Empire Outlets, opened in St. George on Staten Island. Ride the legendary Staten Island Ferry from Manhattan across the harbour to explore over 100 stores. AFTERNOON: Reimagined with a third more space and new exhibits, the Museum of Modern Art is a must-see. From there, walk through Central Park and stroll the city’s Museum Mile, dipping into the likes of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. EVENING: Round-off your trip by heading over to the popular East Village, a microcosm of the Big Apple’s diverse foodie scene: Korean, Polish, Japanese, Italian, Chinese… you name it, it’s here. Complete your visit by raising a glass to NYC in a gritty dive bar or classy cocktail bar.
