CLEARWATER BEACH, FLORIDA Wide, sugar-soft sands that gently shelve into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico make this a favourite beach for families as well as for couples, thanks to its glorious sunsets. It stretches for two-and-a-half miles on a barrier island with hotels, shops and restaurants across the promenade and coastal road. A free trolley service along the beach links to other coastal towns. POIPU BEACH, HAWAII Actually a series of three crescent-shaped beaches of golden sand, Poipu Beach is located on Kauai’s sunny southern coast. Lava rock formations and a barrier reef protect the eastern portion from surf and currents, making it great for swimming and snorkelling, while the other side has bigger waves and is popular for boogie-boarding and surfing. The beach is an excellent spot for dreamy tropical sunsets. MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA Not just one beach but 60 miles of soft sands known as the Grand Strand entice visitors to the northernmost part of South Carolina’s coast. With the pulsating city of Myrtle Beach at its heart, there’s no end of things to do, both on the beach and beyond its boardwalk. The beach itself has live music, theatres, restaurants, dinner shows and family attractions, while the city and area offers amusement parks, more than 90 golf courses, fishing and water sports galore. NORTH BEACH, TYBEE ISLAND, GEORGIA The closest beach to Savannah sits on a striking stretch of coast that curves around the tip of Tybee Island. The quietest of the Island’s three public oceanside beaches, it is popular for shelling and is towered over by the historic black-and-white Tybee Island Lighthouse. Activities include biking, kayaking and boat tours to see the resident dolphins.
