BOREALIS AURA MAKING HEADLINES Amtrak’s Borealis rail service between Chicago, Illinois, and St. Paul, Minnesota, has proved so popular since its introduction in May 2024 that Amtrak and state partners Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois, which fund the service, are looking to add capacity. Amtrak has also launched a new Chicago-Miami route. AMTRAK IS SPEEDING AHEAD New-generation Acela trains on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor are whisking passengers between Washington DC and Boston at speeds of up to 160mph. Amtrak’s most environmentally sustainable trains to date feature at-seat meal service, access to station lounges and contactless luggage storage. LET THE COG TAKE THE SLOG Ride on America’s two cogged railways. The Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire climbs to the 6,288ft summit using steam and diesel locomotives. The round trip on Colorado’s Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the world’s highest and longest cog railway, takes three and a half hours. ALL STEAMED UP TO YESTERYEAR One of America’s most popular heritage trains, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has, chugged through Colorado’s Rocky Mountains and San Juan National Forest since 1882. Enjoy a day trip to yesteryear to historic mining Silverton. Some services are operated by steam train, while others are hauled by diesel locos. ARRIVE BY PLANE THEN TAKE THE TRAIN Tour operators, travel agents and customers can now seamlessly book combined plane and train journeys when arriving into or departing from Orlando International Airport. Brightline, which runs an express service to Miami, was granted a designator code by airline organisation IATA in autumn 2024.
