There are also sculptures, costumes, musical instruments and arms. SMITHSONIAN MUSEUMS, WASHINGTON DC Seventeen museums and galleries in the nation’s capital, 11 of them on the National Mall, are free to visit. These include the Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The complex houses 150 million objects, works of art and specimens. PHILADELHIA MUSEUM OF ART One of the largest museums in the U.S., its 200 galleries contain 240,000 objects from the first century AD to the modern era. A four-year renovation and extension of the historic 1928 building by celebrated architect Frank Gehry was completed in 2021, part of an ongoing revamp of its galleries and public spaces. DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS Home to more than 140 galleries, its collection contains over 65,000 works, putting it in the top six U.S. art institutions. They span American, European, modern and contemporary, and graphic art, as well as significant African, Asian, Native American, Oceanic, Islamic and Ancient art. GETTY CENTRE, LOS ANGELES More than one million visitors a year ride the tram from the streetlevel entrance to the Getty Centre, set within 86 landscaped acres on a hill with views of Los Angeles. The J. Paul Getty Museum displays art, sculptures and photographs. In Pacific Palisades, the Getty Villa highlights ancient Greek and Roman art.
