Exploring the Deep South: Music, Food and Culture

 

The Deep South is perfect for a taste of true America! It’s a great road trip destination with vibrant cities, small American towns, varied history, live music all year-round and you’ll taste some of the most incredible food....all topped off with a big dose of Southern hospitality!

Music

There's no better way to understand the life of Deep South USA than to take a tour through its musical landscape - soulful blues, brassy jazz, country twang, Cajun accordions and gospel choirs. With live music performed in authentic and intimate settings, you'll find your sound in Deep South USA.

The Deep South region has been home to many famous musicians. Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Lionel Ritchie, Louis Armstrong, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Lainey Wilson and many more were inspired by the blues, gospel and country music history of the area. Tour music museums such as Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, or music studios such as Muscle Shoals Sound Studio – the ‘Hit Recording Capital of the World’.

The biggest Mardi Gras festival is in New Orleans and the oldest is in Mobile, Alabama. Both of which are on many people’s bucket list as a wonderful street party full of sound & colour, but there are many Mardi Gras celebrations and festivals throughout Louisiana and along the coast in Mississippi & Alabama too.

Food

What's on the menu in the Deep South? Sumptuous Southern specialties such as fried green tomatoes, beignets, gumbo, soul food, jambalaya, fried chicken, cornbread, barbecue ribs, iced tea, grits, catfish, soft shell crabs and fresh seafood from the Gulf Coast.

Good food is guaranteed on any Deep South road trip, so go with an appetite! You can follow many culinary trails including barbecue trails or something more unique like the tamale trail to explore different recipes and find your favourite flavours. BBQ and Seafood is enjoyed at many restaurants, festivals and competitions throughout the region with generational dining  producing great, home-style food that’s good for the soul!

Culture

One of the best reasons to visit Deep South USA is to experience the distinctive culture, which is intimately linked with the history, the land and the whole Southern experience. Southern literature is celebrated with many authors inspired by the people and places, take a literature-themed road trip and visit the homes and museums of authors from the region to see the inspiration behind the novels and plays.

Southern homes give you a chance to learn about the centuries of history and step back in time as you explore.
