From Bronzeville to the World...Discover the History of Jazz in Chicago
Chicago has long been a city where music sits at its heart. From being the birthplace of house music to helping shape the blues, its cultural influence runs deep through the music scene in the USA and today ‘Chicago style’ jazz is well known worldwide.

In the early twentieth century, those migrating north during the Great Migration brought jazz with them, settling in neighbourhoods such as Bronzeville on Chicago's South Side. As these communities grew, so did the music scene, and jazz clubs quickly filled the city’s streets, and Chicago became a hub of creativity where musicians pushed boundaries and redefined the genre. Over the years figures like Louis Armstrong played a pivotal role in developing the traditional jazz style, by switching from cornet to trumpet and pioneering scat singing. These innovations helped shape ‘Chicago-style’ jazz, which cemented the city’s lasting influence on the genre.
Fast forward to 2026, and Chicago is once again in the spotlight as the official host of UNESCO’s International Jazz Day, the world’s largest celebration of jazz. Marking its 15th anniversary, this year’s programme will be the most ambitious yet, with more than 40 internationally acclaimed artists, including Melissa Aldana, John Beasley, and Gregory Porter, taking part in the dynamic, citywide schedule of performances, conversations, and cultural events.
Alongside this headline celebration, Chicago continues to offer an impressive range of jazz festivals and clubs for travellers to enjoy throughout the year, and Choose Chicago have listed a few below.
