48 Hours Around a Cavs Game in The Land

For 52 years, Cleveland didn't win a major title in anything. Then in 2016 the Cavs came back from 3-1 down in the Finals, and the whole city poured into the streets. That win still colours a night at Rocket Arena, which makes the Cavs the perfect excuse to tip off a weekend in The Land. Here's how to spend 48 hours around a home game.
---------------------------------------------
Day One
Tip off your weekend in Tremont with brunch at Lucky's Cafe. Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives put it on the radar for many visitors to Cleveland, although local Clevelanders were already well aware, and the cheddar scallion biscuits under scrambled eggs and sausage gravy are exactly the sort of thing he came for.
Before the game night is upon us, soak up a bit of championship history. Great Lakes Brewing Co in Ohio City leans right into it. Their Belgian-style white ale spent years called ‘Wit Till Next Year’, a wink at Cleveland's long-running "wait till next year" sporting lament. When the Cavs finally won in 2016, the brewery renamed it ‘The Wit Is Over’. These days the Cavs collaboration ‘Easy Buckets Blonde’ pours alongside it.
Out west in Westlake, the Emily Roggenburk Shop sells her stunning aerial prints of the 2016 victory parade, about the best souvenir of that great victory a visiting Cavs fan could carry home. It sits in Crocker Park, an open-air stretch of shops, restaurants and a cinema that makes for an easy afternoon in its own right.
Then to Rocket Arena. Drawing you in through the Power Portal, an LED tunnel at the northwest entrance, and into Loudville, the revamped fan zone. Eat before you sit. Try a chicken sandwich with Sweet Dete sauce from Sauce the City, or wander the arena's Neighborhoods for Symon's Burger Joint and its kielbasa-topped Big Cleve Burger. Then the lights drop, and it's just you, a full house and an electric evening of basketball action ahead.
When the final buzzer goes, you'll want to be among the real fans, and East 4th Street is where they head. It's a few minutes' walk from the arena and still buzzing after a game. Join them for a pint at Flannery's Pub, a cocktail at Society Lounge, or a few frames at The Corner Alley.
Day Two
Back-to-back home games are rare these days, so give day two to the rest of Cleveland. Start in Ohio City, where Goldie's Donuts & Bakery does a sour cream donut worth the detour and the Cleveland Bagel Company's number two, with cheddar chive cream cheese, makes the other camp. Pick your allegiance.
There's one last piece of 2016 to see at the Cleveland History Center, which keeps LeBron James's Finals sneakers among the city's keepsakes. After that the day is yours. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame sits right on the lakefront, the West Side Market has been trading since 1912, and Barrio Tacos in the Gateway District does a build-your-own lunch before a few frames at Pins Mechanical Co back in Ohio City, where duckpin bowling meets the 16-Bit barcade.
