LA is the New Sports Capital of the World
The city is currently
celebrating an unparalleled decade of sports, most notably being a host city
for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Super Bowl in 2027, and the 2028 Olympic and
Paralympic Games, making LA the third city globally to host the Olympics three
times. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will receive the Olympic torch in Paris
this summer, kicking off the road to 2028 and turning all eyes to Los Angeles.
There is so much
happening in LA sports right now: Shohei Ohtani, a once-in-a-generation talent,
is drawing fans from around the globe to Dodger Stadium; the state-of-the-art
$1.2bn Intuit Dome arena opens in August as the LA Clippers’ new home – and the
basketball venue for the 2028 Olympics; and LA is home to 11 professional
sports teams, from American football and ice hockey to women’s professional
soccer and basketball.
Here are five ways to enjoy
sports in Los Angeles:
Watch LA’s 11 professional sports teams in action
Football fan? American or
proper football? Or what about quintessential American sports like basketball
and baseball? And don’t forget ice hockey! Los Angeles has professional teams
in all these sports, so no matter when you visit LA, there will always be one
with their season in full swing. The venues are just as iconic as the teams,
and there is even more to see this summer when the LA Clippers basketball team
move to their new purpose-built arena: the Intuit Dome.
Soak up the atmosphere at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
This historic stadium has
hosted the summer Olympics twice (in 1984 and 1932): soon to be three times in
2028, which will be more than any other venue in the world. It’s now home to
college football team the USC Trojans, with tours available if you aren’t
visiting on a game day.
Dodger Stadium has been home to
the eponymous baseball team for more than 60 years. The baseball schedule is
relentless during the spring and summer months, so there’s good innings for
visitors to catch a game and spot new baseball legend Shohei Ohtani take his
turn to bat.
Celebrate sports icons –
including Kobe Bryant – at Crypto.com Arena
Pose with your LA sporting
heroes at Crypto.com Arena, from Magic Johnson to Shaquille O’Neal. Kobe
Bryant’s statue was unveiled in February this year to mark the incredible
career of the Lakers basketball legend, but it’s not the only way to celebrate
his legacy in LA. Hundreds of murals popped up across the city following his
tragic passing in 2020; so many that they’ve been plotted onto a
map so fans can find their favourites.
Beachside sports to live like
an Angeleno
Spend the day surfing in Malibu, skateboarding in Venice,
paddleboarding in Marina del Rey and playing beach volleyball in Manhattan
Beach to work out like an Angeleno. Don’t miss the original Muscle Beach in
Venice – a favourite haunt of Arnie.
