From Michelin Stars to Backyard
BBQ…
Houston has long been one of
America's best-kept culinary secrets, but the secret is officially out. As the
fourth-largest city in the United States and one of its most culturally
diverse, Houston's food scene is a reflection of the people who call it home.
Influenced by more than 70 countries and regions, the city boasts over 10,000
restaurants serving everything from award-winning fine dining to neighbourhood
favourites, authentic global cuisine and legendary Texas barbecue. Whether
you're searching for Michelin-recognised tasting menus, innovative fusion
dishes or smoky brisket straight from the pit, Houston offers a culinary
experience to suit the tastebuds’ of every traveller.

Houston's Michelin Moment
Houston cemented its place on the
global culinary stage when the MICHELIN Guide officially arrived in Texas in
2024. Unveiled during a ceremony hosted in Houston, the inaugural guide awarded
6 Houston restaurants with a star and recognised a total of 30. The city's
growing reputation was further reinforced when Houston was chosen to host the
MICHELIN Guide Texas Ceremony again in 2025. While acclaimed chefs and elegant
dining rooms feature prominently, some of Houston's most celebrated restaurants
are found in delightfully unexpected locations, proving that exceptional food
can be discovered almost anywhere.

Where to dine:
Tatemó (Michelin Star) - Hidden inside an
unassuming strip mall, Chef Emmanuel Chavez transforms heirloom Mexican corn
into an extraordinary tasting menu. Standout dishes include a tuna tostada
topped with caviar, suadero tlacoyo with Mexican XO sauce, and a dramatic mole
negro served beneath a tortilla made from nixtamalised plantains.
Le Jardinier Houston
(Michelin Star) - Located within the Museum
of Fine Arts, Houston, this elegant restaurant pairs refined French
technique with seasonal produce. Beautifully plated dishes, exceptional sauces
and thoughtful cocktails make it one of Houston's best fine dining
destinations. Don't miss the truffle pommes dauphine or the Valrhona dark
chocolate crémeux.
Where Cultures Meet on the Plate
Often recognised as America's most
diverse city, Houston's multicultural population has created one of the
country's most exciting dining landscapes. Here, generations of immigrant
communities have preserved culinary traditions while also creating entirely new
ones. From Viet-Cajun seafood and Mexican-American classics to Indigenous
Choctaw cuisine and contemporary Nigerian cooking, Houston is a city where
cultural exchange happens one plate at a time.

Where to dine:
Ishtia - Led by
renowned Choctaw chef David Skinner, Ishtia celebrates Native American cuisine
through modern interpretations of Indigenous ingredients and cooking
traditions.
Crawfish & Noodles
- One of Houston's signature dining experiences, this pioneering Viet-Cajun
restaurant is famous for its flavour-packed crawfish boils that blend Louisiana
seafood traditions with Vietnamese spices.
ChòpnBlọk
(Michelin Bib Gourmand) - An epic celebration of Nigerian cuisine, ChòpnBlọk
introduces diners to bold West African flavours through contemporary dishes
inspired by traditional recipes.
The
Original Ninfa's - Widely credited with inventing the fajita,
Ninfa's remains an essential stop for Tex-Mex classics and a true Houston
institution.
Agnes and Sherman (Michelin Recommended) -
An inventive neighbourhood favourite known for playful fusion cooking,
including its cult-favourite cheeseburger fried rice that perfectly captures
Houston's creative culinary spirit.
Texas BBQ, the Houston Way
No visit to Houston is complete
without experiencing Texas barbecue. While the city is home to acclaimed
smokehouses serving perfectly smoked brisket and ribs, barbecue here is also
deeply rooted in community, backyard gatherings and cultural tradition.
Throughout the year, visitors can immerse themselves in Houston's barbecue
culture at major events including the Southern
Smoke Festival each October, celebrating chefs and hospitality while
raising funds for industry workers, and the Houston Livestock Show and
Rodeo, which begins with the World
Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, attracting pitmasters from across
the globe.

Where to dine:
Khoi Barbecue - A standout example of
Houston's multicultural food scene, Khoi BBQ blends classic Texas barbecue
techniques with Vietnamese flavours to create a smoked meat experience quite
unlike any other.
Blood
Bros. BBQ (Michelin Bib Gourmand) - One of Houston's most celebrated
barbecue destinations, Blood Bros. combines traditional Texas barbecue with
Asian influences, serving everything from exceptional brisket to inventive specials

time to visit than during Houston
Restaurant Weeks (1 August-7 September), when more than 350
restaurants across the city serve special prix fixe brunch, lunch and dinner
menus in support of the Houston Food Bank. From Michelin-starred favourites
like Le Jardinier and BCN to beloved local institutions, every meal helps
provide food for families in need.
