The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad Experience
Listen for a steam whistle through the Sierra National
Forest; a sound defining the Yosemite region for over a century. Located
outside Yosemite's South Gate, the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad offers
a living history experience. Riding these rails is an immersive journey back in
time.

Historic Power and Natural Beauty
The railroad features two rare narrow-gauge Shay
locomotives, including legendary Locomotive #15. Built in 1913, it is the
world's largest operating narrow-gauge Shay. Alongside the 84-ton Locomotive
#10, these iron giants carry passengers on a one-hour return journey through a
towering pine forest. Recently, the railroad acquired a third engine, Shay #12,
which celebrated its 100th birthday this past April. The newest addition is
undergoing a full restoration with the hopes of returning #12 to service.
The Depot is a hub of activity. Families can pan for gold,
explore the Thornberry History Museum, and browse the gift shops. For
enchanting evenings, the summer Moonlight Special offers a three-hour
experience with BBQ dinner, live music, and a campfire sing-along. Music lovers
can also enjoy the Jazz Train, featuring live performances and local wine.

A Festive Grand Finale: The Holiday Magic Train
While the main season runs from April through November, the
railroad caps off the year with the Holiday Magic Train. Running from late
November through December 30, this special event transforms the depot into a
glittering winter wonderland. Twinkling lights, holiday carols, and a visit to
the hot chocolate bar for cocoa and cookies turn the forest journey into a
seasonal peak experience that has quickly become a must-do tradition.
