For spectacular views take the Skyline Drive from Shenandoah National Park, which includes a 101-mile part of the trail that runs along the ridge of the Blue Ridge mountains. The bright blue lake is the largest alpine Lake in North America and one of the clearest lakes in the world at 99.7% purity. Surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains, you’re perfectly placed here for an outdoorsy holiday. By night, you can get cosy at the luxurious The Lodge at Edgewood, where each room has its own fireplace and private deck or terrace. The lakefront pool here is heated all year round and offers memorable views of the shimmering waters of Lake Tahoe and the mountain peaks beyond.

Hop into a hot spring in Dunton, Colorado

For a really atmospheric honeymoon, stay at Dunton Hot Springs, a restored 1800’s ghost town in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado, whose hand-hewn log cabins have been converted into luxury lodgings and former saloon is now the central dining area. The resort is also home to hot springs, where you can soak after a day of outdoors activities. Depending on the time of year, you can go horseriding, hiking, fly fishing, skiing, snowmaking, stand-up paddle boarding and more. This bicarbonate water is said to help open up peripheral blood vessels and improve circulation to the body’s extremities, and the magnesium in it promotes healthy skin. You can try out the waters for yourself in five ways, and at a range of temperatures: inside the restored 19th century Bathhouse, under the stars at the source spring itself, in two outside pools and one inside the Well House cabin. The resort’s Mountain Romance package ensures an extra special experience and includes champagne, flowers and chocolate-covered fruit upon arrival, spa treatment and private excursions.
