A Summer by the Water in Annapolis

There is a certain ease to summer in Annapolis. The kind you notice straight away. Mornings drift in slowly, boats move gently across the harbour, and the day unfolds without much effort at all.
From June through to August, Annapolis and Anne Arundel County settle into a rhythm that feels entirely their own. Life shifts outdoors. Evenings stretch. Plans become looser, and somehow better for it.
---------------------------------------------
Festivals to start the summer
The season opens with energy. The Let’s Go! Music Festival brings a weekend of live music, with a mix of well-known acts and emerging talent. It sets the tone early, relaxed and social.
Soon after, the Annapolis Juneteenth Parade & Festival brings the city together. Music fills the streets, local vendors line the route, and there is a strong sense of community that carries throughout the day.
Midweek, but not as you know it
As June moves into July, it is often the smaller moments that define the experience.
On Wednesday evenings throughout the summer, sailboat races take place just offshore. It is a long-standing Annapolis tradition and a reminder of the city’s deep connection to the water.
A few streets back, West Street takes on a different feel during Dinner Under the Stars. Tables are set beneath string lights, the street closes to traffic, and midweek evenings become something far more memorable.
A Fourth of July that fits the setting
The Fourth of July feels perfectly placed here. A parade moves through downtown during the day, before the focus shifts to the waterfront for fireworks over the harbour, reflected in the water and framed by the city’s historic skyline.
Into the heart of summer
As the weeks roll on, the calendar continues to evolve without ever feeling too full. Live music, local events and waterfront experiences keep things moving, while the harbour remains at the centre of it all.
By August, attention turns to the Chesapeake Bay. The Annapolis Rotary Crab Feast is one of the best-known events of the season, where cracking open fresh Maryland blue crabs becomes less about the meal and more about the shared experience.
Events such as the Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival add another layer, bringing history and storytelling into the heart of the summer.
---------------------------------------------
What makes summer here stand out is how naturally everything fits together. You move from water to street, from quiet moments to lively ones, without ever feeling like you are following a plan. Some days begin with a festival. Others end with dinner under the lights. Other times, it is simply sitting by the harbour as the day comes to a close.
Summer in Annapolis & Anne Arundel County is not something you need to organise too carefully. It is something you fall into, and once you do, it is very easy to stay a little longer than expected.
