Five Ways to Explore Park City's Mining History

Park City, Utah, is known for its pristine mountains, vibrant ski scene, and hundreds of miles of biking and hiking trails. But the city also holds a unique history, rooted in silver mining. Traces of this past are still visible today, and a visit to Park City offers a glimpse into why the city became a year-round outdoor destination instead of a ghost town. There are many ways to delve into the region's mining history, including unusual options like hiking and ski touring, as well as a "Mines and Wines" tour. This allows visitors to not only enjoy a diverse vacation but also become experts on Park City's fascinating mining heritage!

Park City Museum
The Park City Museum on historic Main Street offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's silver mining era. Numerous permanent exhibits illuminate the Great Fire of 1898, the pre-Prohibition period, and daily life during the silver boom. The museum is housed in a historic jail, with its original cells preserved in the basement. Other highlights include a multi-story, scale model of the underground mine workings, complete with lighting, sound, and mining equipment.

Park City Ghost Tours
Park City's history is far from pristine. Once a rough mining town, it was home to gamblers, brothels, outlaws, and adventurers. Though its rough edges have been smoothed since the 18th and 19th centuries, the spirit of danger, thrills, and wildness still lingers in the mountain air. And amidst gourmet restaurants, small independent shops, and galleries, lurking in the background is a history of the past - eerie and mysterious - that not everyone knows. The Park City Ghost Tours offer a unique perspective on Park City's history.

Mines and Wines Tour
The Fox School of Wine's "Mines and Wines Tour" is a fun and unique way to learn about Park City's mining history while enjoying fine wines at various stops. The tour includes six stops at historic mining monuments throughout the city and offers not only a deep insight into the past but also interesting facts about wine.

Historical Audio Tour
For those wanting to delve deeper into Park City's history, the TravelStorys app offers an immersive audio tour that brings the stories of this iconic place to life. Developed in partnership with TravelStorys and presented by the Park City Chamber & Visitors Bureau, the tour serves as a helpful resource for both visitors and Park City residents eager to learn more about the city's past. Featuring 13 stops, each averaging 3-5 minutes in length, the tour provides an excellent opportunity to discover the details of the historic Old Town, explore the mining history, and discover Park City's evolving culture.

Silver to Sopes at Park City Mountain
During the winter months, Park City Mountain offers free historical tours of the mountain. Guides accompany advanced skiers on a tour past relics of silver mining and historic buildings around the resort, providing fascinating insights into the region's past. These tours are highly recommended, as Park City Mountain is dotted with historic mining structures that are clearly visible from the slopes. A guide shows guests the best route and shares interesting information that would otherwise be missed while skiing.

Exploring on your own
Whether skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, or enjoying other activities - summer or winter - those who keep their eyes open will discover traces of Park City's silver mining history everywhere. Statues, mining relics, and historic buildings are scattered throughout the town, and some feature information panels that explain their history. It's fun to imagine what it was like back then!
