If Cleveland isn't already on your radar, it should be. And if you're planning a trip there this summer, the waterfront is where a good chunk of your time belongs.
Between Lake Erie, one of the five Great Lakes and wider than you'll ever expect, and the winding Cuyahoga River running through the heart of the city, Cleveland has more ways to get out on the water than most visitors ever realise. Here's where to start.

Get a Completely Different View of the City by Kayak
There's a version of Cleveland that most visitors never see, and it's the one from the middle of the Cuyahoga River. Rent a kayak from Great Lakes Watersports, drop into the river in The Flats, and suddenly the city makes a different kind of sense. Industrial structures line the banks alongside graffiti murals, bridges pass overhead, and the skyline reveals itself a little more as the river bends. It's a side of Cleveland that genuinely surprises people.
If you time it right, you'll catch the sound of live music drifting across the water from Jacobs Pavilion. That's a good evening well spent.
Rent an Electric Boat and Play Captain for the Afternoon
No boating licence? No problem. Electric Shores Boat Rentals and BrewBoat CLE both offer Duffy electric boats that seat up to 12 people and require nothing more than a valid driving licence to get behind the wheel. Think of it as a floating patio with Bluetooth speakers, coolers and skyline views included. All the easy energy of a perfect summer afternoon on the harbour, no experience required.
Go Parasailing Above Lake Erie
If you're after something with a bit more of a rush, Great Lakes Watersports offers parasailing flights that take you 400 feet above Lake Erie. The views from up there are genuinely spectacular, with open water in every direction and the city laid out below you. The flight lasts around eight to ten minutes and usually includes the chance to cool off with a quick dip of your feet in the lake before returning to the boat.
Try Your Luck on a Fishing Charter
Lake Erie has a legitimate claim to being the Walleye Capital of the World, and a morning on the water with Midtown Fishing Charters is a pretty compelling way to test that. Private trips depart from Downtown Cleveland, with expert guides taking first timers and experienced anglers alike out to the best spots for walleye, steelhead and yellow perch. Anyone over 16 will need an Ohio fishing licence before heading out. Non-residents can purchase one online ahead of their trip.
Do Dinner Differently on the Goodtime III
The Goodtime III has been Cleveland's favourite way to see the waterfront for decades, and it's easy to understand why. Dinner cruises take passengers along the Cuyahoga, past the industrial landmarks of The Flats and out onto Lake Erie, where the city's skyline does something rather beautiful in the evening light. There's food, dancing and views that keep improving the further you get from shore.
For something newer, the Lady Caroline brings a luxury angle to the same idea. A dance floor with stunning views from four decks, and a full programme of brunch, lunch and dinner cruises make it a serious contender. Two good options, one very good waterfront.
Head to Edgewater Beach for the Classic Summer Day
Sometimes the most straightforward option is the right one. Edgewater Beach sits on Cleveland's western lakefront and offers exactly what a beach day should: wide stretches of sand, open water, a community atmosphere and skyline views thrown in for good measure. Swimmers and shoreline walkers share the space happily, and the Edgewater Beach House is right there when you've worked up an appetite. Ice cream, hot dogs off the grill and a bar that does the sunset justice.
Hop on the Floating Tiki Bar
The CLE Tiki Barge is exactly what it sounds like, and it's exactly as enjoyable. Cleveland's only floating tiki bar runs two-hour BYOB cruises along the Cuyahoga River and inner harbour. Public cruises and private charters are both available, and the boat comes with ice, coolers, and sound system. It's the kind of afternoon that's very hard to have a bad time on.
While you're in The Flats, the Cleveland Water Taxi is worth knowing about too. All day passes and hop-on hop-off service connect the main waterfront spots and make it a genuinely useful way to get around.
Paddleboard with the Rock Hall Behind You
Paddleboarding has taken off in Cleveland in a big way, and it's not hard to see why. Wendy Park at Whiskey Island has calm, sheltered water that's ideal for beginners, while North Coast Harbour Marina puts you on the water directly behind the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That might be the most distinctive paddleboarding backdrop in the entire country. Rocky River Reservation, if you want to head a little further out, takes you through wooded waterways and wildlife that make it hard to believe you're anywhere near a major city.
Hit the Open Water on a Jet Ski
For anyone who wants to cover serious ground at speed, Great Lakes Watersports runs guided jet ski expeditions and hourly rentals on Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga. The feeling of open freshwater at full throttle is something else. Popular launch points include Edgewater Park and Marina, East 55th Street Marina and North Coast Harbour, all worth knowing before you go.
