Outdoor Adventures:
For families who love getting out into nature, Fredericksburg and the surrounding Texas Hill Country offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun.
The Texas Wine County Jellystone Park Resort is packed with activities for everyone. Parents can recharge in the park’s year-round pool and hot tub whilst the kids explore the resort’s range of fun activities, from its mini-golf course to its water pool that comes complete with slides and a jumping pillow. Special appearances from Yogi Bear add an extra touch of magic creating memorable moments for younger visitors.
For an unforgettable wildlife experience, Longneck Manor offers exclusive close-up experiences with giraffes and rhinos, led by animal care specialists. Sessions provide the opportunity for the whole family to pet and feed the animals whilst learning about the conservation work taking place on site. If one visit wasn’t enough, the manor also offers luxury B&B accommodations, allowing the family to extend their stay.
If you'd like to combine outdoor adventure with a little local history, the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site is well worth a visit. Home to a World War I era Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm, the park offers families a snapshot into what life was like for former president Johnson’s family when they settled into the area. Beyond the history, visitors can enjoy 1.2 miles of walking trails, a visitor centre and a range of sports facilities including an Olympic-sized swimming pool, making it an ideal destination for a day of exploration, learning and fresh air.
Indoor Activities:
Whether you’re escaping the midday heat or after a rainy-day activity, Fredericksburg has a multitude of kid-friendly indoor activities to continue the fun during your stay.
Nothing livens up a family day out quite like a bit of friendly rivalry. Why not try BB’s Billiards and Bowling for an afternoon of competitive fun? BB’s offers many opportunities to claim a victory over your family, from its games room and pool tables to its traditional bowling centre. Plus, there is a full snack bar on hand to help soften the blow for any sore losers.
Over on Mainstreet, Recess is a playful stop where the younger ones can pick up toys, books, dress-up costumes and more. If the array of goodies weren’t enough, the shop also offers monthly Storytime events which include craft sessions and snack breaks, making it a perfect space to spend a rainy afternoon in Fredericksburg.
Arts and Culture:
For those in the family with a creative flair, Fredericksburg offers a rich selection of arts and cultural centres which provide opportunities for hands-on family learning and creating.
From painting to silversmithing, budding artists will love The Yellow Door Studio and the many different mediums they have on offer. The studio offers plenty of opportunities for the whole family to unleash their creative sides, whether it be getting stuck into pottery and wineglass painting, or creating their own unique Fredericksburg souvenir by decorating oyster shell ring holders. With a carpark on site and weekly classes and drop-in sessions, this space makes it easy to fit in a creative experience into your itinerary.
If history is more your family’s thing, the Pioneer Museum on Main Street is an excellent stop to experience Fredericksburg’s rich German heritage. The museum’s historic architecture and special events throughout the year, help bring the city’s past to life. Visitors can watch staff in period dress lead activities such as spinning handweaving, storytelling, soap-making and more, inviting the whole family to explore, learn and connect with the town’s history together.
If one museum wasn’t enough, families can try the National Museum of the Pacific War, which invites kids to adopt a STEM focused learning approach as they explore the museum’s interactive activities and exhibitions such as the Children on the Homefront: Growing up with War exhibit
Where to Eat:
Empty stomach after a day of exploring? Fredericksburg has you covered with a range of family friendly restaurants serving traditional German dishes as well as Texan Hill Country favourites you can rely on.
You can never go wrong with Pizza and Mr Gatti’s is no exception. All their dough and sauces are made fresh in house daily, with a variety of toppings to choose from. Mr Gatti’s also offers a pasta buffet and the town’s largest salad bar, ensuring everyone’s tastebuds are catered for.
No trip to Fredericksburg is complete without sampling the towns German cuisine. The Old German Bakery and Restaurant on Main Street offers kids the choice of German classics such as pancakes served with applesauce, as well as kitchen staples such as chicken strips and corndogs.
