‘Hidden Trails of Oregon’ Podcast Series

Fronted by international podcast host, Aaron Millar, alongside expert guides and local characters, listeners can join his first-person journey across America’s wild, weird and wonder-filled state. Recorded on-location in surround sound audio, this documentary style podcast series features three episodes that will take listeners beyond the guidebook and into the heart of Oregon’s secrets, showcasing the places only Oregonians will know.

Discover Portland’s favourite food carts, sample food from around the world and go on a secret bar crawl to hidden local spots before heading south to the Willamette Valley to sip some of the most delicious Pinot Noir grapes in the world. This episode ends in Eugene at Saturday Market, Oregon’s premier art market, to meet the makers who helped turn this artist community into one of the most thriving creative hubs in the Pacific Northwest.

This episode begins at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, in Florence, for a sand-boarding lesson from world champion rider Gabe Cruz. Heading south down the coast, Aaron stops at the sleepy seaside town of Port Orford for wild beaches, windswept headlands, ocean swells and one of the greatest wildlife experiences on Earth. Continuing along the coast, we explore the secret coves of the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor.

Aaron snowshoes to the top of Watchman Peak, for the best view over Crater Lake in the park – “like a sapphire embedded in the Earth”, as he describes it. In Bend, one of Oregon’s premier adventure towns, Aaron details sunset paddling along the Deschutes River surrounded by thousands of swallows, baby Ospreys and a surprise visit from Oregon’s state animal. Heading underground for a spine-chilling 1000-foot descent into a lava tube, formed by a “River of Fire” over 7,000 years ago, hear Aaron’s tales of crawling through 18-inch-wide cracks in true darkness to marvel at the geologic forces that could create this uniquely beautiful landscape. Ending in Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Reservation for some “river therapy” and a fly-fishing lesson from a native guide.
