5 of our favourite coastal road trips.

See below 5 of our favourite coastal road trips.
1)      Florida Keys.
Start in Miami and then head out along one of the most scenic drives in the country. The Overseas Highway spans 113 glorious miles as it links the southern tip of the Florida mainland with the Caribbean feeling city of Key West. The many islands are connected by 42 bridges, but for the most part it is just you and the ocean. Whilst it can be driven in a few hours, why not spend a few days fishing, enjoying the watersports and dining on abundant fresh seafood.
2)      Route 1.
One of the most famous coastlines in the world. This is California at its magnificent best. The road stretches along most of the California coast, but the most scenic part is between the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Travelling in either direction is a delight but heading south does give you the benefit of being on the ‘ocean side’. Take your time along the route and enjoy surfing in Santa Cruz, hiking in the Big Sur and visiting the Spanish missions in Santa Barbara.
3)      New York to Bar Harbor.
From New York to the wild and rugged Maine coast, this route has something for everyone. The first half between New York and Boston can be spent beach hoping along the north shore of Long Island Sound and to the sailing capital of America, Newport with its beautiful Harbor and famous mansions. After spending a time in Boston, travel along the Maine coast before finishing at the crown of the north Atlantic coastline, Arcadia National Park.
4)      The Gulf Coast.
If you are looking for history and culture whilst on your coastal road trip, then look no further than the Gulf coast of Alabama and Mississippi. Start in the party city of New Orleans and head east along the powdery Gulf beaches and take in the rich landscape of French, Spanish and Creole heritage.
5)      Pacific Northwest.
For jaw-dropping beauty, it’s hard to beat this untamed coastline. Start in cosmopolitan Seattle and head west by island-hopping through the coastal communities of Puget Sound before arriving on the Olympic peninsula. Take in the wilderness and majesty of Olympic National Park before heading south to the laidback and liberal city of Portland with its choices of microbreweries and coffeehouses.
