A First Timers Guide to Lubbock

So, you’re headed to Lubbock for the first time? Prepare for a thriving music scene, impressive museums, mouth-watering refreshments, and so much more. No matter your reason for visiting – a short trip, a Red Raiders game, or sheer curiosity – we'll help you discover the best the Hub City has to offer.
Explore the music scene
Lubbock's musical reputation is deeply rooted in the legacy of rock 'n' roll pioneer Buddy Holly. His legacy continues to fuel Lubbock’s vibrant live music scene, which offers something for everyone, from large-scale concerts to intimate bar gigs.
Cook’s Garage: Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Cook's Garage, a legendary outdoor concert venue. Expect great crowds and even better country music, surrounded by classic cars and eye-catching neon signs.
Buddy Holly Hall: Buddy Holly Hall is a prestigious cultural centre in Lubbock, known for hosting some of the city's biggest concerts. It boasts a history of performances by iconic musicians, including Bob Dylan, ZZ Top, and the Goo Goo Dolls.
Depot District: For a more intimate live music experience, visit the Depot District. Venues like the Cactus Theatre and the Blue Light offer smaller, but equally captivating performances, spanning genres from soul to indie-pop.
Catch the big events
There are lots of special events sprinkled throughout the calendar, so make sure to see if one of them is happening while you’re in town. If you can choose when you visit, it’s a great idea to pick a weekend when you can catch one!
Broadway shows: Buddy Holly Hall complements its live music with a superb Broadway entertainment schedule. The American Theatre Guild brings a diverse selection of national touring productions, including Les Misérables, Annie, and Chicago.
Cotton Fest: Experience a weekend of pure country vibes at Cotton Fest. This annual BYOB festival, which debuted in 2018, celebrates the heart of the region's music scene and features camping, cookouts, and even a golf tournament!
Lubbock Uncorked - At the annual Lubbock Uncorked festival, ticket-holders can sample a wide array of wines and beers from local and regional producers, enjoy tasty food from diverse vendors, and groove to live music.
Enjoy some amazing food
Lubbock is undoubtedly a foodie’s paradise, but a handful of local favourites are especially must-visits.
Evie Mae’s: If you're looking for top-notch Texas barbecue, Evie Mae's is the place. Indulge in generous servings of their savoury ribs and brisket, perfectly complemented by green chili cheese grits and cornbread.
Dirk’s: For classic comfort food, head to Dirk's. This popular spot serves up delicious fried chicken and chicken fried steak, with gumbo and fried okra as popular side options.
Holly Hop Ice Cream: Holly Hop is a rare gem, transporting you to the 1950s with its authentic décor and free jukeboxes. The experience is made whole by their signature banana split.
Journey through the museums
To truly understand Lubbock, you’ll want to delve into its vibrant history and culture through its exceptional museums.
National Ranching Heritage Centre (NRHC): For a full breakdown of Lubbock’s roots, shaped by westward-moving ranchers, a visit to the NRHC is essential. What sets it apart is the collection of meticulously preserved historic structures that vividly illustrate the ranching history that defined our city. Plus, it’s free!
Buddy Holly Centre: You’ll be surprised to learn that a young man who died at 22 transformed Lubbock into a vibrant music hub. The Buddy Holly Centre offers a fascinating glimpse into Holly’s life and career, revealing how he sparked this transformation.
Silent Wings Museum: Learn about Lubbock's significant role in WWII history at the Silent Wings Museum, a heartfelt tribute to the U.S. Army Air Forces Glider Program. See the gliders, weapons, and other equipment used by these courageous pilots.
Sip and savour
Two must-try beverages during your visit are the regional wine and signature Chilton.
Texas High Plains Wine Trail: Did you know the High Plains region grows over 85 percent of Texas's wine grapes? That's why our wine trail is so amazing! The trail features seven of our favourite tasting rooms.
Flipper’s Tavern: Experience a true local favourite at Flipper's and try their classic Chilton, a flavourful blend of vodka, lemon water, and soda water. Beyond the classic, they offer exciting flavours like strawberry lemonade and mango lime, all enjoyed in a fun, pinball-filled atmosphere.
Feed a prairie dog
Lubbock's Prairie Dog Town is a truly delightful and unusual spot. Since the 1930s, it's been a place where you can get an intimate look at the charming lives of prairie dogs. Witness their playful behaviour as they emerge from their burrows, communicate with chirps, and stand guard. Make sure to bring some baby carrots – the friendly residents appreciate a treat!
