Fredericksburg, Texas - Outdoor Activities

With scenic hills, colorful wildflowers and plenty of outdoor activities, there is an open-air adventure for everyone. Fredericksburg offers everything from viewing millions of bats and over 300 species of birds to hiking and rock climbing, bicycling and horseback riding.
Fredericksburg is home to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, the second largest batholith in the United States. Hikers can explore the pink granite dome that is estimated to be one billion years old. After a short hike, visitors can take in views of the Texas Hill Country from 425 feet. Stay after dark and enjoy a night hike or stargazing as Enchanted Rock is one of the few International Dark Sky Parks in Texas. Reservations to the park can be made up to 30 days in advance. Be sure to plan ahead as Enchanted Rock is one of Texas’ most popular attractions and the park can reach capacity.
The area offers several other outdoor recreation areas including Cross Mountain, which is home to a lighted cross at an elevation of 1,951 feet and views of downtown Fredericksburg. Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park and the town’s square, Marktplatz, include playground and picnic space as well as plenty of flowers and native plants.
Take a ride on the backroads of Gillespie County that provide miles of scenic views and wildflowers in the spring. An abandoned railroad tunnel just outside of town is home to millions of Mexican free-tailed bats every May through October. Old Tunnel State Park Bat Cave has two viewing areas which require a small fee in advance only. Permits are not required if visited between sunrise and 5 p.m. From May through mid-August, it’s peach season. There are approximately 40 varieties of peaches produced in the Fredericksburg and Stonewall area. Visitors can sample peaches on orchard tours, at fruit stands, at farmers’ markets or can pick their own tree-ripened peaches at Jenschke Orchards.
