Instagrammable road trips – Scenic Byway 12

Whilst it isn’t particularly long, what it packs in during those miles will take your breath away. It is home to Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks, Escalante Petrified Forest and Kodachrome Basin State Parks, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and finally, the 1.8 million-acre Dixie National Forest. All that in 124 miles!
Let’s look at some of those locations mentioned in more detail;
Bryce Canyon National Park: Famous the world over for its ‘Hoodoos’ (with the largest concentration anywhere in earth) Bryce isn’t a single canyon, but a series of natural amphitheatres carved into the edge of a high plateau. The park is full of hiking trails that allow you to enjoy this geological wonder and take all those Instagram photos that your friends and family are sure to be jealous about.
Capitol Reef: Probably the least well known of Utah’s ‘Mighty Five’ National Parks, but this hidden treasure is certainly worth your time and exploration. Located deep in Utah’s red rock country, there are plenty of canyons, cliffs and natural bridges to get that awesome selfie. It is also recognised as an International Dark Sky Park which means on a clear evening the sky will be lit up from the heavens with millions of stars that will take your breath away.
Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument: If your plan is to really get away from it all, this place has to be on your list. An area the size of Delaware this rugged paradise will let you explore the plateaus and canyons until your hearts content. One of the last places in the lower 48 states to be mapped, you won’t struggle to take that unique photo to share with your followers on Instagram.
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area: The main feature of this magical place is the 200-mile-long Lake Powell that offers you all the water-based activities you could possibly want. For those once in a lifetime photos, hike Coyote Gulch, a 13-mile side canyon with sandstone natural bridges, arches and streambeds.
Cruise America has depots in Las Vegas, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Denver which are perfect places to start or finish your adventure along Scenic Byway 12.
