Nevada beyond Vegas: explore the state behind the city.

Three things you may not expect from Nevada;
1.       The state is one of the largest yet least populated in America. This means there is lots of empty space, interesting, deserted landscapes and very little light pollution, making it a photographer’s dream. Dark skies are big deal here and can be seen across the state. See (and photograph) the Milky Way like you’ve never seen it before from Great Basin National Park or Valley of Fire State Park, where you’ll find the fantastic Elephant Rock. Lake Tahoe and Spring Mountain Ranch State Park are pretty photogenic too!
2.       Just north of Vegas, you’ll find the Extraterrestrial Highway and the infamous Area 51, the top-secret government facility that has been the inspiration for conspiracy theories and a hotbed of UFO sightings for decades. The area has also acted as a location for many alien-inspired films including the Simon Pegg comedy ‘Paul’ which shot scenes at the aptly named A’Le’Inn Cafe near Rachel. No visit to the area is complete without checking out the nearby Alien Research Centre and a photo with ‘Fred’, the resident alien!
3.       One thing you may not realise about Nevada is the number of Ghost Towns that are dotted through the state. With a mind-melting 668 ghost towns and only 100 populated towns, its no wonder that visiting a ghost town (or two) should be on your itinerary. One of the most popular towns is Rhyolite, which popped up in 1905 after high-grade ore was discovered here. By 1920 though, the power was cut off and the town has been deserted ever since.
