Illinois Office of Tourism

From small towns with big stories, culinary discoveries and epic road trips to vibrant history and culture, Illinois has it all! Boasting three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 64 state parks, 2,900 lakes and seven national scenic byways the state provides endless opportunities for outdoor adventures.

Crowned the Best Big City in the U.S. in the Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards for the ninth year running, Chicago offers world-class museums, 19 Michelin-starred restaurants, and architectural icons. The city’s 77 vibrant neighbourhoods are rich with arts, comedy and music. Visitors can enjoy Lake Michigan views along 18 miles of the city's lakefront trail, offering walking, cycling, and waterfront recreation opportunities. Travellers can also explore Millennium Park’s cultural attractions and experience the city’s famed sports action at Wrigley Field, Soldier Field, or the United Center.

Beyond Chicago, adventure and wellness awaits. Travellers can hike in Starved Rock State Park, kayak through the Cache River Wetlands or take a hot air balloon ride over Galena. Those seeking relaxation can enjoy wellness focused activities such as Tai Chi classes at Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford or a yoga retreat at Soul Farm in Amboy.

Illinois’ presidential heritage shines at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield, along with sites honoring presidents Grant in Galena and Reagan in Dixon. Architecture fans can follow the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail to 13 open homes across the state, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites designed by the iconic architect.

Route 66 marks its 100th anniversary in 2026 and visitors to Illinois can enjoy special events taking place along the route. When it comes to the classic American road trip, the state is also home to The Great River Road and Lincoln Highway, each with dramatic landscapes and vibrant communities.

Another highlight in 2026 is America 250, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Visitors can connect with this historic milestone via events including Rockford Symphony America 250 Concert, Starved Rock Pow Wow and Chicago’s UNESCO’s International Jazz Day 2026.

2026 also sees the much-anticipated opening of the Obama Presidential Centre, the Galena Bicentennial, the debut of Sports Illustrated Resort and Bally’s Flagship Casino in Chicago, and the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club.
