Virginia Raises a Glass to America's 250th Anniversary

Decanter medals, Financial Times praise, and a presidential bourbon release shine a spotlight on Virginia's flourishing wine and spirits scene
America was made in Virginia, and as the United States celebrated its 250th anniversary on 4 July 2026, the Commonwealth continued to offer visitors another compelling reason to explore its rich heritage: a fast-rising wine industry and a whiskey tradition that dates back to George Washington himself.
Virginia's growing reputation as a world-class drinks destination was recently highlighted by the Financial Times, which described the state's wine scene as "vibrant, varied and rapidly improving" and noted that leading critics and international competitions are increasingly recognising the quality of Virginia wines.
The publication highlighted standout varietals including Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Petit Manseng and Bordeaux-style blends, while showcasing several of the state's acclaimed vineyards as among the most exciting wine experiences within easy reach of the capital Washington, D.C.
That growing prestige has now been reinforced on the global stage. The Monticello AVA (American Viticultural Area), located around Charlottesville in central Virginia, secured 26 medals across 10 wineries at the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards.
Widely regarded as one of the world's most respected wine competitions, the awards recognised Virginia producers with four Gold, 13 Silver and nine Bronze medals across a diverse range of wines including Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Merlot, Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, sparkling wines and rosé.
Among the Gold Medal winners were Chestnut Oak Vineyard, King Family Vineyards, Pollak Vineyards and Veritas Vineyard & Winery, while Cabernet Franc emerged as one of the region's strongest performers with seven medal-winning wines.
The Financial Times noted the growing international reach of Virginia wines, and increasing recognition from critics, so wine enthusiasts ought to hop on the trend before the hype.
A Presidential Whiskey Legacy
Alongside its flourishing wine industry, Virginia is also celebrating a remarkable chapter in American spirits history.
2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the reconstructed distillery at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, where the first U.S. president established his whiskey operation after leaving Presidential office in 1797. Historical records indicate that Mount Vernon quickly became one of the largest whiskey producers in the young United States, producing primarily rye whiskey and generating approximately 11,000 gallons before Washington's death in 1799.
To mark both the distillery milestone and America's 250th anniversary, Mount Vernon has unveiled one of its most exclusive releases ever: Spirit of '76 Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey, the first bourbon released from the reconstructed distillery in more than two centuries.
With fewer than 350 bottles produced, the highly collectible bourbon was distilled, aged for seven years and bottled entirely by hand on site using traditional 18th-century methods. Crafted using copper pot stills, wooden mash tubs and period-accurate techniques, the release celebrates both the ingenuity of early American distillers and George Washington's entrepreneurial legacy.
The Story Behind the Glass
For travellers inspired by America's 250th anniversary, Virginia offers a unique opportunity to experience both the nation's history and its evolving food and drink culture.
Visitors can explore the vineyards of the Monticello AVA in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, sample internationally recognised wines, and then continue their journey through American history at George Washington's Mount Vernon, where a working distillery keeps alive the traditions of the nation's founding era.
From award-winning Cabernet Franc and Petit Manseng to handcrafted whiskey produced using centuries-old methods, Virginia's wine and spirits scene provides the definitive taste of taste of the birthplace of America, one that's capturing the attention and pallets of those on both sides of the Atlantic.
