For travellers who think they already know Louisville, 2027 offers a reason to look again. Kentucky’s biggest city is entering a new era: bourbon is getting bolder, museums are pushing the boundaries of accessibility, and Louisville’s long-standing relationship with music, sport and pop culture is getting a 21st-century remix.
Arrive by River
Discover a new side to the United States arriving to Louisville via America’s scenic inland waterway on Viking Cruises new 2027 routes. The newly announced itineraries include the 15-day Bayous, Blues & Bluegrass voyage operating between New Orleans and Louisville, as well as the 8-day Mississippi & Ohio River Explorer itinerary sailing from Memphis to Louisville.
As the city shines from the water, voyagers can take in the newly designed Waterfront Botanical Gardens. In the spring, this already opened 2.25-acre expansion will complete a Bonsai House & Garden, Tree Allee, and Beargrass Creek Overlook continuing to turn what was once a landfill into an outdoor urban oasis.
Historic Milestones and New Museums
At the centre of Louisville’s cultural refresh is a wave of new museums and cultural offerings
The Dot Experience at the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) (Opening October 2026): This $22 million expansion aims to become one of the most accessible museums in the world featuring tactile, audio, and braille-rich exhibits and will include the world's largest repository Helen Keller’s archives, a piano once played by Stevie Wonder, and one of just six remaining copies of Louis Braille’s 1829 manuscript.
The Speed Art Museum (2027): 2027 will mark Kentucky’s oldest and largest art museum’s 100th anniversary as it continues to invite and inspire audiences through the power of creativity across major exhibitions and an encyclopaedic permanent collection that spans 6,000 years of human history. As part of its recent $22 million makeover the museum now includes a new park and sculpture garden
Sons of the American Revolution Education Center and Museum (2027): Fresh off America's 250th, this new museum will open on Main Street spanning the entire American Revolution introducing visitors to pivotal people and events of the period through interactive galleries and a genealogical library with more than 50,000 materials.
Bourbon City, Extra Strength
Trademarked as Bourbon City, Louisville is starting 2027 off stronger than the spirit it is most known for. Coming this February, visitors and locals alike are welcome to experience Louisville’s inaugural Bourbon City Distillery Days, where participating distilleries will celebrate special bottle releases, share curated tastings and offer deals on tours. With the annual Bourbon Classic rounding out the month, February is shaping up as a particularly good time to visit for bourbon enthusiasts and newcomers alike. For those not able to make it in the first part of the year, with more than a dozen distillery experiences, bourbon-themed hotels, endless cocktail bars and plenty of bottle shops, bourbon flows through the destination throughout the year.
Louisville Pop Culture Remix
Louisville’s pop-culture legacy is anything but one-note and coming into 2027, it will step back into the spotlight.
Amazon Prime’s upcoming Muhammad Ali drama series, The Greatest, is scheduled for release in November 2026, bringing renewed global attention to the city that shaped the boxing legend. At the Muhammad Ali Center, visitors can explore Ali’s life, career, Louisville upbringing and connection to the American Civil Rights movement.
Then there’s a very different kind of cultural flashback. December 2027 marks 50 years since Saturday Night Fever, a perfect excuse to rediscover Louisville’s forgotten status as the “Glitter Ball City.” For decades, Louisville produced a huge proportion of the world’s disco balls. A former manufacturing site has since become The Myriad Hotel, where mirrored disco balls reference the building’s unlikely industrial past.
Major Sporting Events
Returning in spring to the historic Churchill Downs racetrack is the 153rd running of the Kentucky Derby, the "Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" on Saturday, May 1, 2027. This year, the Derby will kick off a new multi-city six-race Thoroughbred Championship Series, culminating with a new championship race back in Louisville in September. Tickets will go on sale later this year with a variety of options available including general admission, reserved seating, and premium hospitality packages.
Looking even further ahead, following the 2026 Solheim Cup in the Netherlands, tickets are now on sale for the 2028 Solheim Cup happening September 6–10, at Louisville's own Valhalla Golf Club. The 21st playing of the biennial LPGA vs. Ladies European Tour showdown, will add a marquee addition to the city's sports résumé making Louisville the only city to host the Solheim Cup, Ryder Cup and PGA Championship.
