Home
to Bonfires
on the Levee, this historic custom takes place all over Louisiana, most
famously on Christmas Eve. Rooted in Cajun traditions, one origin theory of the
bonfires credits French German settlers who wanted to guide arriving ships
along the Mississippi River. Whatever the legend, thousands gather each year
for their impressive size, and of course, the merriment that goes with it.
Another must-do is the 99th Annual Natchitoches
Christmas Festival, renowned for its family friendly fun and cultural traditions.
What began as a small festival has grown into a six-week long celebration with
thousands in attendance, and visitors flock to see the ‘City of Lights’,
parades and fireworks. Meanwhile, the Baton Rouge Ballet stages a classic
holiday favourite, The Nutcrack: A Tale from
the Bayou. This southern adaptation has been reimagined to incorporate
local flair, folklore and traditions.
For some real classic Christmas shopping there are
plenty of markets in Louisiana. The Farmers
Market in Monroe offers a festive shopping destination;
the Noel
Village is a wonderland of family activities; and the Moss
Holiday Market showcases seasonal crafts and local treasures.
At the start of January, Twelfth Night,
falling twelve days after Christmas, marks the beginning of carnival season.
