Maryland

The Free State

From mountains, to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Maryland boasts a vast assortment of outdoor activities, unique attractions, and historical landmarks. It has been described as 'America in Miniature' since it encapsulates so much within about a three-hour drive of Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Western Maryland is the perfect place for adventure. There are picturesque mountains for hiking and white-water rapids for rafters; Deep Creek Lake for boating and water skiing when its warm or Wisp Resort for winter skiing. If you prefer to step back in time, explore the C&O Canal and Antietam National Battlefield.

Central Maryland is home to both the capital, Annapolis, and its most populated city, Baltimore. This region boasts an unbeatable combination of fun and culture from a ball game to a classical concert, shops to historic sites, plus great meals at the region's famous restaurants. Within a short drive of the big-city hustle and bustle, serene pastures are home to Maryland's thoroughbred horses, old mills and gently rolling farm land.

Southern Maryland is where it all began back in 1634, when 140 Europeans arrived to settle the colony at St. Mary’s City that would become Maryland. Today it is also renowned for the best bass fishing on the East Coast.

Maryland’s Eastern Shore is home to the state’s famed blue crabs, fresh from the Chesapeake Bay. Spend a day sailing or kayaking on the bay and discover this region’s alluring history and scenery. Or, drive the region’s scenic byways and visit waterfront villages like St. Michaels and Cambridge. Check out Ocean City, Maryland’s largest beach resort along nine miles of prime Atlantic coastline.

Highlights

From the Atlantic Ocean to the western mountains, Maryland offers a vast array of land and waterscapes. Discover big cities and small towns along the Scenic Byways, and experience the unique culture of the Chesapeake Bay.

State Secret

No visit to Maryland is complete without tasting Blue Crab. Crab cakes can be found on most menus and each chef uses his own recipe twist – but locals favour Old Bay seasoning.
