Visit Detroit: $75 Million Motown Museum Expansion

The world-famous Motown Museum is currently closed for the final phase of a $75 million expansion, set to reopen in spring 2027. One of Detroit’s most visited cultural sites, it attracts thousands of UK and international visitors annually, drawn by its historic role in shaping the Motown sound and American music history. The city and museum leadership are investing in this major renovation to preserve the iconic studio while creating a world-class visitor experience with immersive exhibits, a state-of-the-art recording studio, performance theatre, and expanded facilities.
While the museum is closed, Detroit remains a must-visit music destination. Music is in the city’s pulse with live gigs at Detroit Music Hall, jazz and blues nights in Midtown and Corktown, music-themed walking tours, visits to the Detroit Institute of Arts, and major music festivals such as the Movement Electronic Music Festival and the Detroit Jazz Festival.
Detroit has also been named City of the Year in Wallpaper magazine’s 2026 Design Awards*, recognised for its creative momentum from Michigan Central Station and Hudson’s Detroit to the revival of Book Tower.
Already a UNESCO City of Design and home to the annual Detroit Month of Design, the city’s innovation and cultural energy only serve to enhance its musical heritage. Even while the Motown Museum undergoes its upgrade, Detroit’s festivals, creative spirit, and cultural significance ensure it remains a must-visit destination for US city breaks.
